Crimes of the Heart

By Beth Henley

In Hazlehurst, Mississippi the Magrath sisters have gathered to await news of the family patriarch. Their grandfather is living out his last hours in the local hospital. Lenny, the oldest sister, is unmarried and facing diminishing marital prospects; Meg, the middle sister, who quickly outgrew Hazlehurst, is back after a failed singing career on the West coast; Babe, the youngest, is out on bail after shooting her husband in the stomach. Their troubles, grave and yet somehow hilarious, are highlighted by their priggish cousin, Chick. Also in the mix is the awkward young lawyer who tries to keep Babe out of jail while helpless not to fall in love with her. The play is about how its young characters escape the past to seize the future.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee

By Rachel Sheinkin

An eclectic group of six mid-pubescents vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens sing and spell their way through a series of  (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life unaffirming "ding" of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves!  At least the loser get a juice box.

Six awkward spelling champions learn that winning (and losing) isn't everything.

Featuring a fast-paced, wildly funny and touching book by Rachel Sheinkin and a truly fresh and vibrant score by William Finn, this bee is one unforgettable experience.
